Sweetest Ghost

I am faithful to you
even though you are
an apparition
the sweetest ghost I know

I won’t ever leave
even though you are not here
I cannot look away

talking to you every day
you don’t answer
but I have faith

wandering with you
has left me lonely
but never alone

If only I could touch
your face again

I would remember
that wish we made
together
long ago

clear, like a bell in a fog
steady, like sun burning through

in just the right dream
a trick of the light
I could know the watchword

we’ve done this before

but you are a phantom
dancing on the horizon
next to a drowning fire

and I am between the worlds
staring
until my eyes
go numb

there you are,
out of the corner
and when I turn to
love you

you vanish

like that sinking sun
